A stroke can happen without warning and change a person's life in minutes: the loss of movement, speech, independence and sometimes identity. But recovery is possible, and it is more powerful when it is holistic.
At Teamwork Physiotherapy Centre International we built the Teamwork Stroke Recovery Network: a seven-specialist multidisciplinary team that surrounds each patient with the full care they deserve. Stroke recovery happens when every specialist talks to each other, agrees on goals and puts the patient at the centre.
Common signs and symptoms of stroke
- Weakness or paralysis on one side of the body
- Difficulty walking, balance problems and falls
- Slurred speech or difficulty finding words
- Swallowing difficulties
- Memory, attention and thinking changes
- Low mood, anxiety and loss of confidence
- Stiffness and spasticity in the arm or leg
The Teamwork Stroke Recovery Network: 7 specialists
- 1
Neurologist: diagnoses and monitors brain recovery and prevents recurrence through medical management.
- 2
Physiotherapist: rebuilds movement, balance and strength, helps patients walk and transfer, reduces complications of paralysis and improves posture and coordination.
- 3
Occupational therapist: retrains everyday skills such as dressing, feeding and bathing, supports memory and thinking, improves fine motor skills and checks home safety.
- 4
Speech and language therapist: restores communication and treats swallowing difficulties, two things many people do not realise stroke affects.
- 5
Psychologist: addresses anxiety, depression, grief and loss of confidence, and supports the family. Healing the mind matters as much as healing the body.
- 6
Nutritionist: designs heart-friendly, brain-supportive meal plans that help manage blood pressure, cholesterol and diabetes.
- 7
Cardiologist: monitors heart health, manages hypertension and guides safe rehabilitation to prevent another stroke.

Recovery and what to expect
Most recovery happens in the first three to six months, when the brain is most adaptable, but people continue to improve for years with the right practice. Holistic rehabilitation improves mobility and independence, communication and thinking, emotional wellbeing and quality of life, and reduces the risk of another stroke. Home stroke rehabilitation is available across Kampala.
Stroke: frequently asked questions
How soon should rehabilitation start after a stroke?
As soon as the patient is medically stable, often within days. Early, regular therapy gives the best results, but it is never too late to improve.
Can a stroke patient recover the ability to walk?
Many stroke survivors regain the ability to walk, sometimes with an aid. Progress depends on the size and location of the stroke and on regular, focused rehabilitation.
Do you provide stroke rehabilitation at home?
Yes. Our team visits stroke patients at home across Kampala for UGX 120,000 per session, and also trains family members.
How can another stroke be prevented?
Controlling blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol, taking prescribed medicines, staying active, eating well and stopping smoking all reduce risk. Our cardiologist, neurologist and nutritionist support this.
