Orthopaedic Manual Therapy and Manipulation

Hands-on treatment by physiotherapists trained in orthopaedic manual therapy: joint mobilisation, spinal manipulation and soft tissue techniques that ease pain and restore movement.

Orthopaedic manual therapy is a specialised branch of physiotherapy in which the therapist uses their hands to assess and treat joints, muscles and nerves. Skilled, precise techniques can reduce pain quickly, free stiff joints and make it easier to move and exercise.

At Teamwork Physiotherapy Centre International, manual therapy is always part of a complete plan. It opens a window of reduced pain and better movement, and targeted exercise and education then keep the improvement going.

Manual therapy techniques we use

  • Joint mobilisation: gentle, graded movements to restore joint range
  • Spinal and joint manipulation: a quick, controlled movement, used only when the assessment shows it is safe and suitable
  • Soft tissue mobilisation and myofascial release for tight muscles and fascia
  • Neural mobilisation to improve the movement of irritated nerves, for example in sciatica
  • Muscle energy techniques and assisted stretching
  • Spinal traction where indicated

Assessment comes first

Every patient has a full assessment before any hands-on treatment: history, movement tests, neurological checks and screening for warning signs that need a doctor's review. If scans or a specialist opinion are needed, our orthopaedic specialist, spine surgeon and neurosurgeon are part of the same team.

We explain each technique, what you may feel, and ask for your consent before we start. Manipulation is never forced, and gentler techniques are always available.

Manual therapy works best with exercise

Research consistently shows that people with back, neck and joint pain do best when hands-on treatment is combined with exercise and advice. After each session you receive a short home programme, and we progress it as you improve so the problem is less likely to return.

Orthopaedic Manual Therapy: frequently asked questions

Is spinal manipulation safe?

When it follows a careful assessment by a trained physiotherapist, manipulation is a safe and well-established treatment for many back and neck problems. We screen for conditions where it should not be used and choose gentler techniques when needed.

Is manual therapy the same as massage or chiropractic?

No. Manual therapy is delivered by physiotherapists as part of a full rehabilitation plan. It includes soft tissue work like massage, but also targeted joint and nerve techniques, and it is always combined with exercise and education.

How many sessions will I need?

Many people notice a change in the first one to three sessions. A typical course is four to eight sessions, depending on how long you have had the problem and your goals.

Does manipulation hurt?

Most people feel pressure and sometimes hear a click, but it should not be painful. Some mild soreness for a day afterwards is normal.
