Postural and Scoliosis Screening

Early screening for scoliosis and posture problems in adolescents and adults, with customised exercise and bracing programmes when needed.

Scoliosis is a sideways curve of the spine, often with some rotation. It most commonly appears in children and teenagers during growth spurts, and in its early stages it is usually painless and easy to miss. Finding it early matters, because treatment is most effective while the spine is still growing.

Our screening service checks children, teenagers and adults for scoliosis and other posture problems, and gives families clear next steps.

Signs parents can look for

  • One shoulder or shoulder blade higher or more prominent
  • Uneven waist or hips
  • The body leaning to one side
  • A rib hump when bending forward
  • Clothes hanging unevenly

The screening

  • Posture assessment from the front, back and side
  • Adam's forward bend test and a scoliometer measurement
  • Flexibility, strength and leg-length checks
  • Referral for an X-ray and specialist opinion when needed

Treatment when a curve is found

  • Scoliosis-specific exercise programmes
  • Posture correction, core strengthening and pelvic stabilisation
  • Customised bracing for growing children with moderate curves, through our orthotic partner
  • Regular monitoring as your child grows
  • Referral to our spine surgeon for large or progressing curves

School screening days

Schools in Kampala can book a screening day for pupils. We provide a short report for parents and advice on posture, school bags and desk set-up.

Postural & Scoliosis Screening: frequently asked questions

At what age should children be screened for scoliosis?

Screening is most useful between about 10 and 15 years old, during growth spurts, but we can assess children and adults of any age.

Can exercise correct scoliosis?

Scoliosis-specific exercises can improve posture, strength and symptoms and may help slow progression of smaller curves. Moderate curves in growing children may also need a brace.

Does scoliosis always need surgery?

No. Most curves are mild and are managed with monitoring and exercise. Surgery is considered only for large or rapidly progressing curves.
